Gymnastics – forward rolls!

We have been learning how to do a forward roll in our P.E. lessons.

We had to learn how to use our core and arm strength to perform the rolls with control and also how to tuck our chins down to perform the roll safely.

Everyone had a really good try and we are seeing real progress! Take a look at the videos below.

N does gymnastics outside of school so she modelled what a good one looks like!

Then after lots of practise, the rest of us had a go at showing off our new skill.

Some of us managed to stand up afterwards, using just our core strength.

Another gymnast showing us how to keep the movement fluid and graceful.

It was great to see A showing so much confidence.

At the start of the session E could not do a forward roll at all – now look at him!

I loved seeing everyone having a go and encouraging each other.

Partner balancing in P.E.

In P.E. we have been practising a variety of balances. We have been trying to hold ourselves still for at least three seconds in our pose and then transitioning into our next one.

To make it more challenging we had to work co-operatively with a partner and perform the balances on a range of body parts. Here are some examples… super work, Year 2!

Robin Hood…

In Year 2 we are working on creating a fact file on Robin Hood. We have been learning all about him in class.

We acted out the story of ‘The golden arrow’ to get a good understanding of the characters.

Then we looked at different objects that are significant to Robin Hood and wrote matching sentences for each one. Now we are working on extending those sentences and making them more interesting.

We have also looked at lots of different examples of fact files and how they are set out.

We then explored paint on the computers and had a go at drawing Robin Hood… it was NOT easy! We also learned how to save these to our Year 2 folder.

Sketching at forest school…

In Year 2 we have started learning about Robin Hood.
We found out that he used a big oak tree as his hideout (the Major Oak tree) in Sherwood Forest.

We found this very interesting so we went to forest school to look at the different trees we have. We managed to identify an oak tree!

We then got out our sketchbooks and had a go at sketching the trees.

We noticed that all the trees are slightly different. Some have thick trunks, while others are very thin. Some have bark with lots of texture, while others are smooth. We had a go at adding this detail onto our drawings.

Art week continued…

Year 2 have been learning how to access the paint programme on the computers.

We used the laptops to create art in the style of Georgia O’Keeffe. We all managed to change the brush, colour and size. We then had a go at drawing flowers.

Next time we will learn how to save a document and how to print it out!

Georgia O’Keeffe

Our chosen artist for art week is Georgia O’Keeffe.

We began by looking at examples of her art and recreating them in our sketchbooks.

We then went on a walk and used iPads to photograph objects up close.

We then used the photographs to draw in the style of Georgia O’Keeffe (zooming in, creating an almost abstract piece)

We then used oil pastels to create big, bright flowers in a similar style. We practised blending colour with our fingers.

Next week we will explore the same style using paints. Check the blog for updates!

Balance

In P.E. we are beginning a module on gymnastics. We have started with balance.

We have been creating different shapes with our body and holding them still.

We began with different variations of an anchor pose. One of our legs has to anchor our whole body down.

We then moved on to a rock pose. This is when we balance on a bigger part of our body, for example our back, tummy or shoulders.

For our final balance we tried to use both our hands and feet or knees.

We then showed our three balances to our partner and they told us how we could make our balances even better!

Next time we will have a go at travelling and then balancing to create a fun routine.
